Job Search Buddy

Finding that next job can be very trying these days.  Due to the current economic down turn, many of us have found ourselves without a job, and without the tools to help us secure our next position.  We find ourselves competing for the same job with many qualified people.  Staying at home, sending out resumes, and making calls only seems to bring us down and ends up being unproductive.

During my transition from Unisys Corporation, I have found that by establishing a Job Search Buddy, I can use teaming techniques that have been successful throughout my management career.  Solving problems and customer issues have always been a challenge, but by teaming with other individuals, solutions can sometimes be identified more easily.   Teaming up with someone with similar career search objectives can make the job search process a more valuable and positive experience for you both.

The Job Search Buddy approach is a very easy concept.  This approach to finding your next job requires that you have a fairly good rapport with your Job Search Buddy.  You essentially are both in the “same boat”, applying for jobs that match your experience and skill level.  Although you do not need to be looking for the same position, it does help if you are at similar levels. (Ex. Programmers, Management).  A buddy in the same related industry can help find leads to job openings.

Although family, friends, and networking with colleagues is still very important in your job search, having a Job Search Buddy can make the difference in your overall attitude towards finding your next job.  Having a Job Search Buddy gives you some accountability to your every day approach to gaining employment.  It’s similar to having a workout partner at the gym. There are some days when you just don’t feel like exercising, but if you have someone that is counting on you being there, you usually show up and feel better for the effort.

How to Work with Your Job Search Buddy

  1. Have one-on-one meetings every week
    • Discuss resumes, cover letters, and job opportunities
    • Practice your elevator speech
    • Raise each other’s morale
    • Share interviewing techniques
    • Discuss target companies
  2. Contact each other by phone 3-5 times a week
    • Share experiences with recruiters
    • Schedule job fair opportunities
    • Discuss Organizations and Associations to join
  3. Email regularly

    • Send articles (company information, data)
    • Review correspondence letters
    • Review follow up letters to employers
    • Plan out your week

I believe that having a Job Search Buddy is very important during this transition phase of your life. It gives you responsibility, accountability, and most important it uses the concept of “two heads are better than one”.  It also makes the task of searching for a new job more fun and fulfilling.  Use this technique to stay focused, committed, positive, and upbeat during this phase of your life.

I’m currently on my second Job Search Buddy.  My first buddy was fortunate enough to land a position and is doing well. What I have found out during this Job Search Buddy process is that it not only gives purpose to this up and down ride of transition, but I have also made life long friendships with colleagues that I have grown to admire and respect.

I hope that you will find this technique to be a useful tool during your transition.

Good Luck During Your Job Search!
